'PSD OYEE, PSD OYEE': Dr Biruta (Left), now education Minister dances to party songs with Dr. Jean Damascene Ntawukuriryayo, the current senate president.

Kigali: The troubled education ministry has been put under the stewardship of the ex-senate president, Dr. Vincent Biruta – after it spent more than two months without a line-minister, RNA reports.

Announcement on state TV Tuesday morning said President Kagame and PM Pierre Damien Habumuremyi had appointed Dr. Biruta to the education docket.

The ministry has been without a minister since October when Habumuremyi, who had barely been there for four months was named PM. Before that it was Dr. Charles Murigande, who was sent to Asia as ambassador.

Dr. Biruta has been in parliament for most of his recent political career – serving as president of parliament during the transitional period up to 2002. In 2003, he was named among President Kagame’s senate appointees.

In October, his one eight-year term in senate ended. The education ministry only had a junior minister.

Dr. Biruta is the president of the Social Democratic Party (PSD).
