Editor--There are reports that Rwandans especially those in top government positions are campaigning for amendment of presidential terms to
allow President Paul Kagame to run for a third term.
The Rwandan constitution voted in 2003 says that Presidents are allowed to be in power for only two terms of seven years each. Kagame just completed
his first term and he is doing second one that will end September 2017.
Although Kagame has not publicly shown signs of staying in power, politicians in other political parties like internal security Minister of Islamic
Party of Rwanda have pledged to support him.
If Kagame listens to such voices, he risks leaving a questionable legacy because Rwanda is still a young democracy.
After winning a second term, Kagame made it clear that he would not seek another term. We hope such voices that are calling for a constitution
amendment thin out so that real democracy takes root in Rwanda.
